CLOTHES ARE ALL ABOUT FEELINGS. The feeling of confidence you get by wearing something that looks good on you. The feeling of satisfaction when pieces you own combine harmoniously in a perfect outfit. The feeling of freedom when you wear something comfortable. The feeling of laziness that overtakes you when you wake up and realize that the outfit you had planned the previous night looks rather “uncomfortable”. The feeling of discomfort you endure when something you wear looks great but doesn’t feel that great.
There is one feeling I particularly like and it’s the feeling of accomplishment when you push yourself out of your comfort zone and you try something entirely new. I’m not going to lie. Sometimes, that feeling of accomplishment is dampened by comments in the lines of “I never thought you would wear that” or “It doesn’t look like you”.
There is nothing particularly offending within those comments but the simple notion that people don’t see you as being able to evolve, annoys you. It feels like they are packaging you in a box, a space you are not supposed to wonder out of. Comments like those often make you analyze the type of message your look gives to other people. Am I doing something wrong for people to think that this me is not part of the genuine me?
Not really.
Style choices are very subjective and people are habitual creatures so it's only natural for them to be discomforted when you break your habit. But that doesn't mean you should stay as you are. This is the point where you should be confident about what you choose to wear, especially if you are a fashion junkie because we are probably the least understood people in a ‘normal’ environment. Fashion people want to try new things. We are bored from the same old same old. For most people, it’s not normal to dress down an elegant look with sneakers. It’s not normal to wear a dress over your pants. It’s not normal to mix loud prints. It’s not normal to wear your pajamas in public. But what is ‘normal’ if not a socially constructed concept accepted by the general public as ‘normal’?

My dad had an old wise colleague {sadly no longer among us} who told me as a kid that:

“If you go out in your pajamas today, people will look at you weirdly. If you do it again, they will be curious why you weren’t flustered the first time they judged you with their stares. Before you know it, they will think it’s a trend and you will see more people going out in their pajamas…. What people think is not as important as it is to be confident in your choices.”*

Just because it's new, it doesn't mean it's not you. You are who you choose to be. So be confident.

 Have a nice day!
ASPIRE HIGHER!

*Back then, he used pajamas as an example for a comic effect, but little did he know that in the future, the pajama trend already happened.
